Radiation Treatment Procedures

One of Our State-of-the-Art X-Ray Machines

Your first visit to our clinic will be for your consult appointment. During a consultation, a patient learns what radiation therapy is, how it works and why it kills cancer cells more efficiently than normal cells. All types of cancer treatment- surgery, radiation therapy and chemotherapy- are explained thoroughly by the doctor. Cancer patients and their families should know that treatment is completely individualized. Very carefully planned courses of treatment and clear answers to patient’s questions and concern are one of the best ways to ensure peace of mind and close physician-patient relationships. For many patients, cancer and its treatment are mysterious. We believe that helping our patients understand their disease and its treatment helps them conquer the greatest fear- the fear of the unknown. (Visit our Frequently Asked Questions section for more info.)

Radiation treatment is one of the most important ways of treating cancer. High energy x-ray machines called linear accelerators are used to deliver high doses of radiation precisely. Radiation is an effective alternative to surgery for many patients with cancer, and in other cases is used together with surgery or chemotherapy to improve the possibility of cure. Even in patients with advanced disease radiation can be used to relieve a patient’s symptoms and improve their quality of life.

Radiation treatments are usually given 5 days per week for 3 to 8 weeks. Each session will last 15 to 20 minutes but the actual radiation is applied for 1 to 2 minutes. The balance of the time is used getting the patient comfortable and in position. Radiation does not hurt, it is like an long x-ray procedure.
