Technical Excellence at Finger Lakes Radiation Oncology Center
Finger Lakes Radiation Oncology Center (FLROC) has been an independent practice since it was founded. All simulations, planning and treatments are done here. This has allowed us to introduce many sophisticated high precision techniques to the area. Our dedicated CT Scanner is connected directly to computers which allow us to plan each patient’s treatment in 3 dimensions. Precision planning and treatment techniques make it possible to deliver high doses of radiation to the cancer while decreasing the risk of complications. We were the first free standing clinic in the area to be certified by the American College of Radiology.
In October 2000, FLROC became the first center in the area to use true Intensity Modulated Radiation Therapy (IMRT). Most facilities use a “step and shoot” IMRT which treats patients from 6 to 9 directions with custom blocking. Our IMRT technique uses a special attachment to turn small portions of the treatment beam on and off thousands of times during each treatment as the machine rotates around the patient. This is a much more precise way of focusing of radiation on the tumor and sparing normal tissues than is the “step-and-shoot” method. There are only two centers in the area that use true IMRT. We were also the first center in the area to use daily ultrasound measurements to improve precision in treating patients with prostate cancer. We introduced this technology in October of 2003. |
